Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens better known as Queen Latifah is an American rapper actress and singer. Her work as a music, film and TV artist has won the actress two Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Image Awards. She also received an Grammy Award and six other Grammy nominations. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot as well as Rita Owens. They were both members of the police force. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher, who taught at Irvington High School. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah was a student at the Catholic school in Newark New Jersey and was raised in her family's Baptist Church. Latifah can be described as an Arabic word which means "delicate and kind". The cousin she had bestowed it on her when she was eight. Always a tall girl her height of 5'10 inches Latifah was a power forward for her basketball team in high school. in a school show, she performed the song Home from The Wiz. Latifah became a beatboxer for her band, the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was among the founding members of the form of Flavor Unit which at that the time was comprised of MCs grouped around producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music, who worked for Latifah during that time and was awed by the track. In 1988 she released Wrath of My Madness as Latifah's debut single.
