Winona-Ryder

Winona Ryder is the professionally-known name given to Winona Laura Hoowitz who was who was born in Winona Minnesota. Her parents named their daughter the city she grew up in after her birthplace. Michel Horowitz was her father and Cynthia Palmer, his mother, were both authors as well as editors. Ryder's dad came from a Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. She also has a half-sister, Sunyata Jubal. Her older sister is Uria. Ryder's family moved from Mendocino County to California, when she was just seven years old. They didn't have electricity. Ryder who was an avid reader aged 12, became a bookworm because Ryder did not have access to television. Ryder took acting classes when Ryder was 12years old at the American Conservatory Theatre. In 1986 she was offered her first role on the big screen in the film Lucas at just fifteen years old. Ryder faced bullying during her time in high school. Ryder hoped her acting career would alter the way she dealt with bullying. Sadly that didn't happen. She continued to pursue her dreams. Her breakthrough came through Tim Burton's Beetlejuice in 1988. Ryder kept playing successful roles in a variety of films. In 1993, she was nominated twice in the Academy Awards. One of them for her role in The Age of Innocence.
